Responsible Use of AI in Education: 7 Key Takeaways

At our recent Future-Proofing Education event in Dublin, Professor Wall, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin and Lecturer at Technological University Dublin, explored the responsible use of AI in education. His insights were thought-provoking and inspirational, to say the least! Here are our 7 key takeaways from his presentation:

1. Embrace AI or be left behind

It’s here, it’s happening, and it’s changing everything. Students are already using AI, like it or not. Your colleagues? Your competitors? Probably using it too, to work faster and smarter. Professor Wall’s advice? Find AI tools that fit your workflow and become unstoppable. He’s using it to write research papers in weeks instead of months – with deeper analysis and a wider range of references.

2. Don’t expect miracles 

AI tools are powerful, but they’re not a substitute for expertise. Without the underlying knowledge and skills, you won’t see a dramatic transformation. However, when combined with your own expertise, AI can help you achieve things that were previously out of reach, improve your performance, or simply speed up your work.

3. AI moves fast, guidelines don’t

AI is developing so rapidly that organisations are struggling to keep their guidelines and best practices up-to-date. It’s difficult to provide useful advice to employees and students when the technology is constantly changing. What’s more, it’s nearly impossible to foresee all the ways AI will be used and create guidelines for every scenario. Professor Wall mentioned the World Economic Forum’s 7 principles of AI in education as a decent example, but unsurprisingly, even those may soon be outdated.

4. De-skilling is a real danger

Students might become adept at using AI to achieve specific outcomes, but without developing the underlying skills to do it themselves. Imagine an accounting student who can use AI to generate a complex financial report, but can’t actually perform the calculations or analysis manually. This raises a crucial question for educators: how important are those fundamental skills in an AI-driven world? Do students need to master the manual processes if AI can handle them? Or should the focus shift towards developing a deeper understanding of how to leverage AI effectively and ethically? This is a critical debate that educators need to engage with to ensure students are truly prepared for the future.

5. Faster education? Not so fast…

Could AI drastically shorten the time it takes to complete a degree? Maybe. It’s theoretically possible to learn the core “hard” skills of a profession much faster with AI assistance. Imagine condensing years of lectures and textbook study into a few intensive months! But education is about more than just technical skills. Developing essential soft skills like critical thinking, communication, and collaboration takes time and experience. These skills are nurtured through interactions with peers, mentors, and real-world challenges, and those can’t be fast-tracked.

6. The human touch still matters

In an increasingly automated world, it’s easy to worry about losing that essential human touch. The truth is, we already have, to some extent. Efficiency often comes at the cost of human interaction. But here’s the good news: empathy and genuine connection are becoming more valuable, not less. Especially in fields like accounting, where trust and understanding are crucial. The winning combination? Advanced skills plus human empathy. That’s something AI can’t replicate (yet!).

7. Seize the opportunity!

This is a pivotal moment for education. AI presents a unique opportunity to reshape how we teach and learn. Imagine personalised learning experiences tailored to each student’s needs, with instant feedback and support. This is the future of education, and it’s within reach! But here’s the catch: if you don’t seize this opportunity, someone else will. Don’t get left behind. Be bold, be innovative, and lead the way in creating a more engaging and effective learning environment for the AI age.

A Final Thought

Professor Wall is right: AI could revolutionise everything we do. Exciting times! But also… a bit scary. No point ignoring it, though. Here are some questions we need to be thinking about:

  • Should students be allowed to use AI tools for assignments and exams? If so, how can we ensure academic integrity and prevent misuse? 
  • And how can we integrate AI education into various disciplines, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world? 
  • We need to think about how to instill ethical decision-making in students when it comes to AI. How can we teach them to use these powerful tools responsibly and thoughtfully? What are the ethical implications of using AI in education? 
  • How do we address concerns about data privacy, ownership, and potential biases?
  • Then there’s the question of how educators can leverage AI to enhance their teaching, create engaging content, and provide personalised feedback? 
  • How can we ensure that human connection and interaction remain at the heart of learning, even as we integrate AI into the classroom? 
  • And how can we harness the power of AI to create a more equitable and inclusive learning environment for all students?

No easy answers, but we need to start thinking about these issues and give some guidance to our students and organisations (even though that will likely be outdated soon).
